The Scene
This is the place to go when you're spending a romantic weekend snuggled down among the snowy pines. Tables grouped around a fireplace in the bar are the perfect place to toast your good fortune, then move on to a seat in the intimate dining room.
The Food
The cuisine here is more urban-sophisticate than the usual mountainside steaks and chops. While the menu changes seasonally, some recent winter dishes included tuna tartare cones, Dungeness crab cakes with mango-apple salad, and roasted-beet salad with toasted hazelnuts, goat cheese and frisee. Entrees might include bison short ribs, pepper-crusted lamb sirloin and grilled venison with brown-butter dumplings.

I used to be a huge fan of Plumpjack Squaw Valley Inn. I even had my wedding reception there. Their wine list is still out of this world with a full range of interesting choices. The last time (fall 2006) I found the whole experience to be below average. After speaking with other, I don't feel this was just an off night. The staff had an indifferent attitude to the customers. I mean we all know workers in Tahoe have other passions, but this was to the point of unwelcoming. We had a group of 6 and no one was impressed with their main however the desserts were still great. A potentially fabulous dinner turned into one no better than a Thursday night at TGI-Fridays. The hotel and restaurant look dated and it appears they are resting on their laurels. I used to recommend it but no longer.
Pros: cool location, great wine list, good desserts
Cons: over priced average food, unmotivated staff, dated

He asked, "Do you think this is a good restaurant to get engaged in?"...And I said, "YES!" The food was superb, the service was excellent (they immediately brought us champagne and sorbet to celebrate), and the ambience was perfect. Highly recommended, especially the foie gras and filet mignon. The bar and fireplace in the cafe area are also great.
